Meghalaya: NEHU Faculty and Staff Escalate Protest Against Vice-Chancellor

SHILLONG: The Joint Action Committee (JAC), comprising numerous recognized statutory associations of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) in Meghalaya, has resolved to escalate its ongoing agitation against the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Prof Prabha Shankar Shukla.

As a first step in their intensified efforts, the JAC has decided to initiate a non-cooperation movement, beginning with the upcoming Academic Council meeting. This decision stems from the perceived non-fulfillment of their demands by the university administration.

In an official statement, the JAC also announced the formal alliance of the NEHU Student's Union (NEHUSU) in their endeavor to champion the overall welfare of the university. The Meghalaya Tribal Teacher's Association (MeTTA) has been acknowledged by the JAC for its unwavering support.

One of the primary demands raised by the JAC is the removal of Rohit Prasad, a contractual Technical Officer/Senior Consultant, who they assert was appointed in violation of established procedures. The deadline set by the JAC for Prasad's removal, as conveyed in a letter dated October 19, has lapsed without any response.

In light of the Vice-Chancellor's alignment with Prasad, despite the perceived illegitimacy of the appointment and the sentiments of various stakeholders, the JAC feels compelled to initiate a comprehensive protest. They will commence with non-cooperation measures and a refusal to participate in the conduct of the upcoming 111th Academic Council meeting, scheduled for October 31 at 11 a.m. in the Multi-use Convention Hall.

Beyond their call for Prasad's removal, the JAC has articulated a series of additional long-pending demands that the Vice-Chancellor was expected to address within specified time frames. The intensification of their protest reflects their determination to ensure the realization of these demands and foster a conducive environment for NEHU's growth and development.
