SHILLONG: The much-awaited Nongpoh-Umden-Sonapur road project in Meghalaya is set to begin in January 2025.

The 58.6-kilometer road, which will link numerous villages in the area, has been a source of frustration for locals who have endured severe hardships due to the road's poor condition, especially during the monsoon season.

The turning point came following a hunger strike by Bindas Syiem from Umden, which garnered widespread attention and support. Nongpoh MLA Mayralborn Syiem’s persistent efforts were also instrumental in securing funding for the project.

The state government has allocated funds under the PMGSY-III Batch-I scheme, with the 38.6-kilometer stretch from Umden to Sonapur estimated to cost over Rs. 47 crore. An additional Rs 49.53 crore has been funded for the 20-kilometer stretch from Nongpoh to Umden under the State Plan.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong will lay the foundation stone for the project on December 10.

Meanwhile, earlier this week, Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had launched the ‘Paint My City’ campaign with the aim of transforming Tura into one of the cleanest and most picturesque towns in India. The virtual launch was attended by Speaker and MLA of North Tura Thomas A Sangma, Deputy Commissioner of West Garo Hills Jagdish Chelani, CEM of GHADC Albinus Marak, and other officials.

Speaking at the launch, CM Sangma highlighted the initiative’s focus on enhancing the town’s aesthetic appeal by painting boundary walls, government offices, and educational institutions.

He further emphasized the importance of community involvement, encouraging citizens to paint their own homes and businesses. “The campaign aims to create a sense of satisfaction and pride among participants by seeing the long-term impact of their efforts,” he added.
