SHILLONG: The Government of India's Ministry of Tourism has unveiled two ambitious projects totaling Rs. 198.54 crore in an effort to make Meghalaya a top travel destination.
Among these projects are the construction of Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) facilities in Mawkhanu, Shillong, and the transformation of Umiam Lake into a renowned ecotourism destination. By promoting other travel destinations, these programs hope to decongest Shillong, establish world-class tourism attractions, and create over 2,600 jobs.
With an estimated cost of Rs. 99.27 crore, the Umiam Lake project will include a food court, craft village, and related ecotourism facilities.
This project aims to establish Umiam Lake as one of India's most recognisable ecotourism locations, appealing to adventurers, nature lovers, and families.
More than 1,300 employment and Rs. 400 crore in Public-Private Partnership (PPP) investments are anticipated as a result of the project. A Music Centre and Academy, glamping accommodations, a Visitor Centre, and a partnership with Taj Hotels for opulent lodging are among the planned developments.
In the same spirit, the Rs. 99.27 crore MICE project in Mawkhanu would concentrate on developing lively public areas and infrastructure to establish Mawkhanu as a top location for conferences and cultural events. Along with festival and multipurpose grounds, planned features include a sculpture park, public plaza, footpaths, pathways, and an amphitheatre.
Along with creating more than 1,300 jobs, the project will draw in Rs. 425.25 crore in PPP investments, which will pay for a convention centre, a golf-themed resort, a luxury prefab resort, an amusement park, a golf club, and a golf course.
Under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) program, both projects are a part of a larger effort. The program, which provides funding for 40 projects totaling Rs. 3,295 crore across 23 states, intends to create globally recognized tourism destinations.
