Shillong: Amid growing security concerns along the international border with Bangladesh, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Home (Police) Prestone Tynsong on Wednesday said the state government is maintaining strict and continuous surveillance along the sensitive stretches of the border to prevent any infiltration attempts.
“Right now, everything is in order. We are closely monitoring the situation on the international border with Bangladesh,” Tynsong told reporters, adding that the government, through the Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, is in constant touch with central security agencies, including the Border Security Force (BSF).
Calling the situation “very fluid,” the Deputy Chief Minister said clear directives have been issued to all traditional heads and village authorities along the border to extend full cooperation with the security agencies. “Therefore, even from the government side, we have instructed all the traditional heads, village authorities to cooperate with the agencies so that we will be safe and no infiltrators should be allowed to enter the boundary of India,” he said.
On the recent arrest of Bangladeshi nationals, Tynsong noted that coordination between state and central enforcement agencies remains robust. “That’s what I am saying, we do have a very close meeting with the concerned agencies both state and central and we monitor 24x7 and in case if anything happen, we are ready to meet all those challenges,” he stated.
The Deputy Chief Minister further informed that efforts are underway to resolve the long-standing land issues along the unfenced portions of the border, which have often posed challenges to border management and security enforcement.
