SHILLONG: Dismissing speculation about conducting a narco-analysis on the prime accused in the sensational Raja Raghuvanshi murder case, Meghalaya Police on Tuesday firmly ruled out the need for such procedures, citing clear confessions and strong investigative groundwork.
Speaking to reporters, East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said, “A narco test is usually conducted when there is no evidence at all, and narco-analysis is actually banned by the Supreme Court.” He emphasized that such tests are not admissible in court and are typically reserved for cases lacking leads.
“Whatever is revealed during a narco test is not admissible in court. It merely provides an idea or potential clue, but it cannot be considered evidence,” Syiem clarified, stressing that this case does not warrant such a test.
Syiem reaffirmed that both Raj Khushwaha and Sonam Raghuvanshi, the prime accused in the murder of Indore-based businessman Raja Raghuvanshi, have already confessed to their involvement. “They have admitted to the crime. We have reconstructed the crime scene, and they showed us how it happened. We have collected evidence from the relevant locations. I don’t see any reason to conduct a narco-analysis at this stage,” he said.
He also confirmed that Raj and Sonam were in a relationship. While the exact motive was not explicitly financial, he pointed to their personal and professional entanglements as significant factors. “They wanted someone—Raja—out of the picture. Because of traditional customs requiring parental approval for marriage, they believed, in their own reasoning, that getting rid of Raja was the only solution,” he explained.
With the crime scene reconstruction complete and key confessions secured, the police are now preparing to file a comprehensive and evidence-backed chargesheet. Syiem reiterated the department’s commitment to a meticulous, fact-based investigation.
