SHILLONG: A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) and the Ri Bhoi District Administration for the supply of 254 solar-powered Eri spinning units. This initiative, funded under IOCL's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 62.98 lakh.

Speaking to the media, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi, Raja Brahma, highlighted that the Deputy Commissioner's Office has taken the initiative to establish Eri spinning centres across 30 Eri-rearing villages. These centres will enable local Eri farmers to process their cocoons into yarn, significantly boosting their earnings. While raw Eri cocoons sell for approximately Rs 600 per kg, machine-spun yarn commands a price of around Rs 3,000 per kg, offering a substantial increase in income.

"The spinning centres will be managed by village Organizations under the supervision of the Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) and the Deputy Commissioner's Office. The District Administration extends its gratitude to IOCL for its generous support in enhancing rural livelihoods," Brahma added.
