SHILLONG: NPP Chief and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma campaigned in the Nongstoin constituency today, seeking support for the party's Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) candidate, Dressar Marngar.
Urging voters to remain steadfast against political rhetoric, Sangma cautioned against parties attempting to "brainwash" people with misinformation. "There will be a lot of heat during the elections, but after they are over, people will again talk about development, livelihoods, and the support they need," he said.
He further emphasized the importance of aligning with the ruling party, stating, "Our party holds an absolute majority in the assembly. It is only the NPP that can provide the necessary support and bring the development we deserve. Therefore, it is imperative that we vote for the government that can deliver on development." Reiterating his stance, he added, "We should not think in any other way but to vote for the ruling party."
Highlighting the NPP's commitment to governance, he remarked, "Many will make claims and promises in politics, but we are here to serve the people and bring development. That is what governance is about. Why should we pay attention to baseless allegations when, after elections, those who make them will disappear along with their promises? Think about what will happen after February 24."
Addressing the coal mining ban, Sangma underscored the NPP's efforts in securing approval for scientific mining. "Officials from the coal ministry have already inspected the mines in the Jaintia Hills and will soon visit the mines in West Khasi Hills. We have overcome one of the biggest challenges, and we hope it will bring positive change," he said.
Reassuring traditional miners, he added, "Miners of sand and other small quarries, spanning less than 10,000 square feet, have urged for exemption from stringent regulation. As a government, we have approached the Centre for exemptions from stringent rules and regulations for small miners. We aim to ensure that the traditional miners will not have to face these challenges."
Sangma also highlighted the government's efforts in sports, education, and infrastructure development. He pointed to the construction of a football stadium and a track-and-field stadium in Nongstoin as evidence of the NPP's commitment to the people.
