Shillong: Plans and suggestions to expand Shillong Airport to handle larger aircraft are being developed by the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
Only ATR 72 flights are currently operated at the airport, although a survey a few months ago suggested that such an increase is possible.

According to sources, it might take some time for the Ministry of Civil Aviation to give the ideas their final clearance. They added, "These are very technical exercises and proposals, and the AAI is working on those proposals,”

The airport need more land in order to make the necessary modifications, according to the Airports Authority of India (AAI). Earlier this year, The AAI's September 3 communication was presented to the Meghalaya High Court on September 5 during a PIL hearing. An overview of the viability of expanding Shillong Airport to handle larger aircraft had been provided.

“It is pertinent to note that the Airports Authority of India as per the LiDAR survey report after examining different scenarios has found that with a few alterations and additional land acquisition of 22 acres, the airport will be viable for accommodating the said larger aircraft and it has been indicated in the said communication that consent has also been given by M/s SpiceJet for the operation of B737 aircraft,” the court said in its order.

However, DSGI N Mozika pleaded that he would be permitted to record the extensive LiDAR survey report. The AG, speaking on behalf of the state respondents, stated that they have also received the aforementioned message and that they would work out and give to the court the implementation modalities after the report is placed.
