Shillong: Meghalaya Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister AL Hek has confirmed that the state government is actively constructing dedicated animal check posts and quarantine centres in Ri Bhoi and West Garo Hills districts to curb illegal transportation of livestock.
“The check post construction will be completing very soon and we will make it functioning. The construction is under progress now, one is in Narang on Ri Bhoi district and other one is at Nidanpur in West Garo Hills,” Hek stated.
On concerns over alleged illegal transportation of animals into the state, the minister maintained that, “I cannot give you the exact report. The department issues Vet certificate to the vendors who are bringing the livestock in the state. Anything that is done illegal should not be allowed, it has to be done with proper documents, proper checking, it can be brought to the state of Meghalaya.”
He clarified that the responsibility of monitoring such illegalities lies with the respective Deputy Commissioners.
When asked about the situation in East Jaintia Hills, Hek responded, “Now we have got sanction for two so let’s start.”
