SHILLONG: In a bold and innovative step to redefine education for its youth, the Education Department of Meghalaya has launched a groundbreaking initiative under the MPOWER programme. As part of this initiative, school playgrounds across three districts in the state are being transformed into vibrant life-skills learning zones.
This move follows the successful completion of the Life Skills Curriculum Contextualization Workshop, which forms a core component of the MPOWER programme by the Government of Meghalaya. The department proudly shared the progress, marking a significant shift in the state’s educational strategy.
Abandoning the traditional “chalk-and-talk” teaching methods, the programme adopts a challenge-based learning approach aimed at equipping students with essential real-world skills. So far, 46 Master Trainers, 1,257 teachers, and 577 school heads have been trained to implement this new model effectively.
“This marks a shift from chalk-and-talk to challenge and transformation—preparing every child for a confident, capable, and career-ready future,” the department said in a statement.
Unlike conventional classroom learning, this hands-on initiative focuses on developing key life skills such as resilience, teamwork, and decision-making. Through activities conducted directly on school grounds, students are encouraged to step outside the classroom and engage in practical, experiential learning.
