TURA: Tura, the quaint town in West Garo Hills, Meghalaya, is abuzz with excitement as it gears up to host the 14th edition of North East Riders Meet (NERM), one of India's largest and most-awaited motorcycle events.

Scheduled from December 5 to 7, 2024, this grand celebration promises to be an unforgettable mix of camaraderie, culture, and adventure.

The NH51 Rebels, the oldest motorcycle club in the Garo Hills, is organizing this year's meet. Formed in 2008, the club takes pride in showcasing the beauty and vibrancy of their region.

NH51 Rebels founder, Dr. Jitu said while making the announcement, "We feel privileged to bring this glorious meet to Tura. It's a wonderful opportunity to let the national and international fraternity see the splendor of Garo Hills beauty, culture, and hospitality."

More than 2,700 bikers will arrive in Tura, from all parts of India, and also from Nepal and Bhutan. Among them is a 26-member team from Sikkim, currently en route. Speaking about the event, Tshering Mongchung, President of the Sikkim team, shared his excitement:  “This is our first time in Tura, and we’re thrilled to experience the hospitality and energy here. To new riders, I’d say: ride responsibly and always prioritize safety.”

The event promises an action-packed schedule, including camping, cultural performances, sporting activities, and nightly concerts featuring the finest bands from the North East and Mumbai. Asibra village in Rongram, situated on the scenic Ganol River, would serve as the hub of this festival.

Entrepreneurs in the district will further enhance the fervor of the festival through stalls for food and artifacts, which would help create a taste for local delicacies and products in visitors.

NH51 Rebels hopes NERM 2024 will be the tourism booster for the Garo Hills, encouraging visitors to explore the natural and cultural riches of the region. Preparations are on among local homestays and campsites in Tura.

Dr. Jitu appealed to the local community to extend their legendary hospitality by saying, "Let's welcome our guests warmly. Even small gestures like showing directions or helping in emergencies can leave a lasting impression. This meet isn't just about motorcycles; it's about community and culture.

It would be noted, however, that these organizers, in supporting safety and drug-free riding, worked with sponsors, leaders, and the Meghalaya Tourism Department to create a memorable and meaningful experience for everyone.

As preparations reach their peak, Tura is all set to become the heart of the North East's biking culture this December. NERM 2024 promises not just a gathering of motorcycle enthusiasts but a celebration of unity, diversity, and the breathtaking beauty of the Garo Hills.
