SHILLONG: Williamnagar, East Garo Hills, is home to WA Sangma, a skilled artisan who has dedicated the past 22 years to crafting exquisite handicrafts. What began as a hobby has since evolved into a thriving livelihood, earning Sangma recognition for his intricate work and unwavering determination.
"I have been making handicrafts for the last 22 years. It's my means of livelihood," says Sangma. His creations, rooted in traditional techniques and inspired by the cultural heritage of the Garo Hills, are sold at various exhibitions and markets across the region. On average, his earnings range from ?15,000 to Rs. 25,000 per event, and sometimes even more, depending on demand.
Like many, Sangma once aspired to secure a government job. However, when those plans didn't materialize, he turned to his passion for handicrafts and transformed it into a sustainable career. "I tried for a government job, but later I adopted my hobby and turned it into a livelihood," he explains.
Today, Sangma operates independently, relying on his dedication and craftsmanship to support his family. His work stands as a testament to the resilience and creativity of individuals who turn challenges into opportunities, while also preserving and promoting the rich artisanal heritage of the Garo Hills.
