Meghalaya Woman Conferred National Award for Best Employee

SHILLONG: A differently-abled woman from Meghalaya did the State proud when she was conferred an award on the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Tuesday.

Celine Lawai of Laitumkhrah, Shillong, was conferred with the National Award for Best Employee for the year 2019 under the Category Locomotor Disabilities.

Vice-President of India, M Venkiah Naidu conferred the award to Lawai during a function to celebrate “International Day of Persons with Disabilities”, organized by the Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment.

Thirty year old, Lawai who is a graduate, has paraparesis in both lower limbs since birth, constituting 90 per cent locomotor disability.

She has conducted awareness programmes and training for persons with disabilities.

She is working as a data entry operator in the Block Development Office of the government of Meghalaya. On the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment confers national awards on individuals, institutions, organizations, States/districts for their outstanding achievements and work done towards empowerment of persons with disabilities every year.

The National Awards for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities for the year 2019, were given under 14 categories.
