TURA: Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University is the first state-owned institution in Meghalaya to be recognised by the University Grants Commission (UGC).

According to an official, the recognition will guarantee that the university has the authority to grant degrees to students in accordance with UGC regulations, which require it to abide by the institution's periodic announcements and be allowed to run its campus in Meghalaya.

The UGC stated in a letter to the university's registrar, "The name of the university has been included in the list of universities established as per Section 2(f) of UGC Act, 1956. The University may note and adhere to the following - the university is empowered to award degrees as specified by the UGC under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956 by conducting courses through its own departments, its constituent colleges and/or through its affiliated colleges in regular mode only."

Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma also praised the accomplishment on his official X handle, saying, "With the Captain Williamson Sangma State University getting recognition from UGC, our colleges have the option to affiliate to the state university so that students applying to those colleges affiliated to state university won't have to appear for CUET in the future." Captain Williamson Sangma Technical University was established through an Act passed in 2011.

Recently, it was announced that the state government of Meghalaya will name Dr. Vasanthi Vijayakumar as the Vice Chancellor of Captain Williamson Sangma State University in Tura.
