SHILLONG: During a recent media interaction, Rajya Sabha MP Wanwei Roy Kharlukhi raised grave concerns over the stalled railway connectivity project for the Khasi and Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. The project, which earlier received Central government funding, now faces serious difficulties after the state government decided to return the allotted funds.
Kharlukhi noted that the repatriation of these funds is a significant hurdle to the revival of the project. "With money already returned to the Centre, I'm not too sure how long it will take for the project to be re-approved," he said, referring to the challenges ahead in restoring the initiative.
The MP also remarked on the recent establishment of an All-Party Committee (APC) with the purpose of reviving the railway project. Although he conceded the possibility of unanimous support within the APC, he was not optimistic about its success in overcoming the financial blow.
Kharlukhi also commented on the decision of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) not to join the APC. He underlined the task of a coalition opposition, adding that constructive conversation might prove beneficial for the government. "I don't know whether avoiding the APC is a productive or counterproductive move," he said, outlining the intricacy of political cooperation in regard to the railroad project.
