SHILLONG: Senior leader of the United Democratic Party (UDP) Bindo M Lanong has expressed the need for stronger restrictions to be imposed, especially in the city, as the number of COVID-19 cases is increasing by the day.

Cases had decreased in December, 2021 and daily new cases did not touch the two-figure mark, while recovery cases hit the two-figure mark. This indicated that there were more people recovering from the virus than those contracting COVID-19.

However, as the New Year began with the presence of the new variant 'Omicron' in the State, cases have increased each passing day and the total number of active cases as on Sunday crossed the thousand mark for the first time in the New Year, with 1,128 cases.

"There is a need to implement stronger restrictions, especially in the city, as most cases are recorded here each day and the Government has to examine this matter," Lanong told The Sentinel on Sunday.

He also said that the Government should observe the increase or decrease of cases in the State and take appropriate steps and measures with an objective to fight the virus as was done last year.

When asked if the Government is waiting for the conclusion of the celebration of 50 years of the State attaining statehood, Lanong, who is also Advisor to the UDP said, "The Golden Jubilee of the State is a different subject matter and the pandemic and increasing cases is a different matter, hence these two should not be mixed up and the Government should take a decision."

It may be mentioned that at present many of the new COVID-19 cases are from East Khasi Hills. Out of the total number of 1,128 active cases across the State, as on Sunday 886 cases are from East Khasi Hill and the majority of these cases are from the city.
