SHILLONG: Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh administered the oath to newly-elected MLA of Shella constituency Balajeid Synrem here on Friday. The swearing-in ceremony was attended by NPP national president and Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma, UDP leaders including MLAs from the Opposition Congress party.

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Balajeid Synrem said, “The priority after winning the by-election is to improve the road conditions in the constituency and to look at ways and means to bring in overall development in the region.”

He also attributed his win to his late father Dr Donkupar Roy and the collective efforts of other political parties within the MDA government.

It may be mentioned that the NPP and HSPDP – two political parties within the alliance – have taken a decision to support Balajeid in the by polls.

NPP national president Sangma while answering a question raised by reporters, said, “Even though the PDF had fielded a candidate in the by-election and we are against each other, the functioning of the government will not get affected.”

He said during the election, things have or might have been said by the PDF. However, that was then but as partners within the government, we all are united.

Meanwhile, UDP president and Meghalaya Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh attributed the historic victory at Shella constituency by a huge margin to the collective efforts of NPP, UDP and HSPDP.

When asked, he said that during the election campaign, the party has never once made any assurance to the public to upgrade Sohra Civil Sub-division into a district. “We as a party has never made such a commitment as we cannot promise such a thing to the public only at the time of election and later backtrack on our promise,” he said.
