Shillong City collects Rs 1 crore over traffic violations

Shillong: Shillong traffic police registered 22,572 cases pertaining to traffic rules violations in the year 2019 and generated more than Rs 1 crore from penalties.

The Superintendent of Police (traffic) Bikram D Sangma during an interaction with The Sentinel on Monday said that during the last quarter of 2019, the number of cases subsided due to the stringent Motor Vehicle Act. During the last quarter of the year 2019, there were 77 cases related to drunken driving, 49 were those who were driving without helmets, 113 without seat belts, 15 cases of vehicles using prohibited LED bulbs.

Disclosing that this is the biggest amount received by the Shillong traffic police in the form of compounding violators, Sangma also informed that the enforcement of the new Motor Vehicle Act has made the motorists a little bit cautious.

With an improved strength of traffic personnel hitting the roads to monitor traffic law violaters, the Shillong traffic police used another method to tame traffic rules violators. Last week, all the violaters were given with a rose each instead of a challan. “It was a gesture that made the violators of being caught in an embarrassing situation”, stated the SP.

Shillong as a city is a having a torrid time in traffic management. Going by the records, 10,000 new cars were registered in East Khasi Hills district in the past three months.
