SpiceJet to Run Flights Between Delhi and Shillong

An agreement has been signed by the Meghalaya Transport Corporation with the Indian aviation player SpiceJet to operate direct flights between Shillong and Delhi, mentioned the officials of the government organisation. These direct flights will operate twice a week on Mondays and Fridays. And this service is expected to begin from the month of February this year.

"SpiceJet approached the state government and offered to operate the Delhi-Shillong-Delhi flights on its own as per the extant terms of MTC. SpiceJet has a total fleet of 23 Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 aircraft. The same aircraft will be deployed for the Delhi-Shillong-Delhi route," mentioned an official statement from the state government.

The statement also mentioned the private airline is looking forward towards fulfilling its commitment and meeting the transportation needs of the people of the state. These direct flights connecting Shillong and Delhi will remove the need to travel to Guwahati in Assam to catch a flight for a large number of passengers from the state. It will also boost the tourism potential manifold.

The state government initiated this new flight route between New Delhi and Shillong back in the year 2020. The contract to run flights at regular intervals was allotted to Flybig airlines, which was also a new entrant in the field at that time.

Flybig initially deployed a Bombardier Dash 8 Q400 that they had chartered from SpiceJet. But with the less number of takers of this service and the Covid-related restrictions, the airline slowly failed to meet the requirements and later expressed its inability to continue with the deal. This led to the final cancellation of the contract between the state government and FlyBig last year.
