SHILLONG: In a major step towards safeguarding the environment, the East Khasi Hills District Magistrate has banned, in writing, the use of poisonous chemicals and explosive materials for fishing in the Umiam River, within the Umlyngka village circle.

The directive, given under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), extends to the river section between Sdad Wah Umkhrah and Sdad Jlu. It absolutely prohibits fishing methods using bleaching powder, ammonium-sulphate, pesticides, dynamite, and other destructive fishing techniques, including the use of unregulated nets.

Officialdom expressed serious concern at the harm such criminal activities do to the river's ecosystem. The application of such noxious substances endangers aquatic life, pollutes the environment, and represents a threat to public health.

The prohibition is meant to restore and preserve the ecological balance of the river and safeguard the rich aquatic biodiversity.

The government has appealed to the residents to cooperate with the drive to enforce and report any infractions. Offenders will be strictly prosecuted in accordance with BNSS rules.

Moreover, officials emphasized that enhanced public awareness was needed in order to appeal to communities to assist in maintaining the area's natural resources for posterity.
