SHILLONG: The police arrested two youths for their involvement in arson incidents last week. It may be mentioned that on February 12, one government vehicle gypsy (ML0-15716) belonging to the PWD was torched near International School Langkyrding, while a pick-up truck bearing Assam registration number (AS-18 C 8797) carrying poultry was torched at Mawsiatkhnam.

In this connection, the police arrested two youths – Banshanlang Marboh (26) and Henry Kharjahrin (20). Both are members of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC), Nongthymmai Circle.

The police said that based on eyewitness accounts and CCTV footages from both the locations, the involvement of miscreants in a bike bearing registration number, ML-05 K 9946 was confirmed.

The police said that the duo has confessed to their involvement in the above cases and further investigation is on even as the police does not rule out further arrests.

“It is to reiterate that HYC is one of the major members of the CoMSO (Confederation of Meghalaya Social Organisations) and the involvement of its members in this appalling act of violence runs contrary to their stated objective of holding a peaceful agitation for implementation of ILP (Inner Line Permit),” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police (SP), Claudia Lyngwa said.

The police also said that “surprisingly”, one of the arrested youth Henry Kharjahrin is the first cousin of CoMSO chairman and HYC president, Robertjune Kharjahrin.

“These acts have created a feeling of panic and fear among the general public and the leaders are hereby directed to refrain their members from any such unlawful activity, as stern action will be initiated against the persons involved,” Lyngwa stated.
