SHILLONG: As part of the Central Government’s ongoing efforts to promote development in the Northeast, Union Minister of State for Cooperation, Krishan Pal Gurjar, visited Mawlai Mawtawar in Shillong on Thursday to assess the progress of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM). The area, which is part of the rural water supply initiative under JJM, has been witnessing significant advancements in providing tap water connections to households.
Following the inspection, the Minister expressed satisfaction with the implementation of the scheme. He stated, “Every three months, at least one Central Minister visits the Northeast to evaluate the implementation of various centrally sponsored schemes. The Centre is continuously monitoring the projects being implemented in the state.”
The Minister also highlighted the availability of natural water resources in the region. “Today, I have come to Shillong on a two-day visit. We inspected the JJM project and the tap water supply system for households. We observed that 40 lakh litres of natural water resources are available here, which are being utilized to supply water to nearby villages. Over the next two days, we have scheduled meetings to review and deliberate on the progress of Central Government schemes in the state. I am pleased with the effective implementation of the project,” he added.
According to official data, 82.89 percent of households in Meghalaya now have access to tap water connections under the Jal Jeevan Mission.
Later in the day, the Union Minister attended a programme at a hotel in Shillong. The event featured a series of presentations on key development initiatives and ongoing projects. These included an overview of DONER (Development of North Eastern Region) projects in Meghalaya, updates on the Cooperation Department, the status of MGNREGA and PMAY(G) in East Khasi Hills District, the implementation of the JJM Scheme in the district, and a special showcase on Shiitake Mushroom Production in Shillong. The District Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department also presented an update on their activities.
