Shillong: The United Democratic Party (UDP) reiterated its opposition to the CAA even as it stressed on the implementation of the ILP in the State.

Speaking to reporters soon after the central executive committee (CEC) meeting held in Shillong on Thursday, working president of the UDP, Bindo N Lanong said, “We collectively decided to oppose the CAA and the other is to push the government to take up with the Centre for the quick implementation of ILP.

Asked on the apprehensions related to ILP and it’s likely to impact on the tourism industry, Lanong felt that the proposed ILP is a simplified one. He said that it should not be perceived as deterrence for visitors.

“It will be a simple registration and one can do it through a mobile phone”, added UDP leader Jemino Mawthoh in his support to the purported plan.

Asked about the CAA which the UDP is opposing when it’s own partner – the BJP is hell bent to make it possible, the UDP leaders were virtually out off words. The present Meghalaya Democratic Alliance comprises of the NPP, UDP, BJP and HSPDP, all partners of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
