SHILLONG: The United Democratic Party (UDP) has projected former legislator Jemino Mawthoh as their choice of candidate for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Mawthoh’s candidature was decided after a deliberation among the UDP leaders which was held at the residence of its president, Dr. Donkupar Roy.

Although the UDP has projected Mawthoh as their candidate for the Lok Sabha polls, his candidature will have to be okayed by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) partners.

Informing this to waiting media persons, UDP general secretary Allantry F Dkhar said, “We will project his candidature to our MDA partners and ask them to accept him as the common candidate.”

It may be mentioned that apart from Mawthoh, Paul Lyngdoh another former MLA had projected himself as the party’s candidate for the Lok Sabha polls.

It may be mentioned that the MDA coordination committee which met on October 29 to decide on a common candidate remained inconclusive. The MDA coalition government of six political parties comprises the NPP, UDP, PDF, HSPDP, BJP, NCP and Independents.

When asked if the MDA would accept Mawthoh as the coalition’s common candidate, Dkhar sounding optimistic said that the UDP was “hopeful”. The UDP general secretary also said that by urging the NPP and other partners to accept Mawthoh as the coalition’s common candidate the party did not snatch anyone’s right to put up their own candidates. “We believe in democracy, we subscribe to democratic practices and democratic principles,” Dkhar said. Meanwhile, the UDP on Wednesday also announced the names of candidates for the Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) and the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC).

Out of the 29 seats in the JHADC, candidates have been named in nine seats. These are Emlangki Lamare (Narpuh), Shanbor Lamare (Sutnga-Nongkhlieh), Laski Rymbai (Tuber), Shanki Shangum (Bataw-Lakadong), Lamdibok Sumer (War East), Suklang Shylla (Nongjngi), Eleazer Dkhar (Mookaiaw), Bison Roy Iano (Raliang) and Kitboklang Nongtdu (Jowai Central).

For the KHADC constituency seats, the UDP decided to give the party tickets to Ryngkat Lyngdoh (Langkyrdem-Laitkroh), Lutphar Dkhar (Nongshken), Philimon Kharmyndai (Sohiong – Nongspung), Chris Kharsati (Sohryngkham), Antonio War (Malki-Laitumkhrah), Nassar Marwein (Langrin) and Anvil Lyngdoh (Mawkyrwat).
