We will get majority on our own: United Democratic Party

District Council polls

Shillong: United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Paul Lyngdoh on Tuesday said the party will win majority on its own in both the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) and Jaintia Hill Autonomous District Council (JHADC) polls.

Lyngdoh said as of today the UDP does not need the help of other parties to form the Executive Committees (EC) in both the district councils.

“We will decide then. As of now, we feel we can manage on our own,” the UDP working president said.

“If we need help we will decide then,” Lyngdoh added.

Meanwhile, the UDP working president also countered the statement of the leader of the Opposition Dr Mukul Sangma who stated that his party is the only party that can defend the people of the Northeast.

According to Lyngdoh, the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill was the original idea of Congress.

The UDP working president stated that India’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru in a letter to Assam’s first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi urged the latter to accept Hindu refugees coming from East Bengal (Bangladesh).

“How can the Congress now reject Nehru,” Lyngdoh said.

The UDP working president also said the BJP’s agenda is to give citizenship to Hindus coming from Bangladesh, but the Congress’ agenda is, apart from giving refuge to 10 million Bangladeshi Muslims, to give citizenship to the Hindu Bangladeshis.

“Who is more dangerous?” Lyngdoh asked even as he stated that such acts will only put in danger the demographic structure of the northeast region.

Lyngdoh further said there were attempts to insinuate the party and him in the recent attack on the vehicle of Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), general secretary, Donald V Thabah.

Lyngdoh pointed out that on that particular night, apart from the attack on the vehicle of Thabah, there were two other cases of criminal acts by miscreants.

The UDP working president informed that another vehicle at Lumkshaid was vandalised and there was an attempted burglary at Pdenshong – both under Mawprem locality.

“These are criminal incidents and cannot be linked to the district council polls,” Lyngdoh added.

It may be pointed out that Lyngdoh, himself a former president of the KSU, is pitted against another ex-general secretary of the KSU, Auguster Jyrwa who is fighting on a Congress ticket.

He also said that these insinuations were spread by the Congress. “…because it knows that it will lose this elections,” Lyngdoh said.

The UDP working president also blamed the drug menace in Mawprem locality for the various cases.
