SHILLONG: Senior State BJP learder and Health Minister AL Hek stated that he is against anything which is not for the interest of the people of the State of Meghalaya including the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB).

His statement came on a day when the ruling NDA government in the Centre introduced the Bill in the Lok Sabha.

Speaking to a section of the media at his office chamber, Hek said, “The Bill has been introduced in Parliament but it has yet to be passed. However, as an MLA, I am against any bill, be it CAB or any other bill, which is not in the interest of people because as political leaders we have to protect the indeginous people of our State.”

When asked, he said the MDA government along with the BJP, which has two members in the government, will continue to oppose the CAB.

“Since the very beginning, we have been united to oppose the CAB and a Cabinet resolution was also taken to express our opposition against the bill, hence our stand will not change,” he said.

When asked, he said there is a need to study the content of the Bill introduced in Parliament today and if it is eventually passed, then a call will be made to take up the matter with the Centre.

“As an MLA I will have to study the content of the Bill and understand if it’s good or bad for the people but for now I cannot make any more comments without first going through the said Bill,” he said.
