AIZAWL: Buddha Dhan Chakma, the only Bharatiya Janata Party legislator in the Mizoram legislative assembly submitted his resignation on Tuesday. He gave his resignation to the BJP district president of the Chakma Autonomous District Council.
In his resignation letter, Buddha Dhan Chakma mentioned the development in the council and took responsibility for the party’s performance in the recently conducted elections for the Chakma Autonomous District Council. The performance of the party was below expectations in the polls conducted earlier this month.
Out of the 20-member Chakma Autonomous District Council, the Mizo National Front claimed 10 seats. Bharatiya Janata Party had equal shares of 10 seats each in the elections. The elections were held on May 9. But soon after the results, three elected members of the council from the Bharatiya Janata Party and two from the Congress party quit their own parties to join the Mizo National Front. All the twenty elected members of the Chakma Autonomous District Council were sworn in on Tuesday.
The previous chairman of the council, Hiranand Tongchangya administered the oath to the newly elected members of the council. Kali Kumar Tongchangya from the Mizo National Front was the lone candidate to submit her nomination for the position of the Chairman of the Chakma Autonomous District Council. The result was expected to be formally declared on Wednesday.
It is important to note that the state of Mizoram goes to polls for the state assembly towards the end of the year. Although the campaigning process for the polls has not officially started yet, this win is expected to be a major boost for the Mizo National Front in the small Northeastern state which is already in power. Zoram People’s Movement is the main opposition party in the state, followed by the Indian National Congress.
