AIZAWL: The 2024 International Paragliding Championship and Aerosport Festival commenced on Tuesday in the Serchhip district of central Mizoram. The event is set to continue until Friday, with the closing ceremony taking place at the Zawlpui landing site, where Mizoram's Chief Minister, Pu Lalduhoma, will serve as the chief guest.
Although 76 paragliders had registered for the championship, more than half were unable to make it to India. Of the 30 participants present, 17 are from India, including 8 from Mizoram.
Pilots from South Korea, Nepal, Kazakhstan, and Indonesia are also competing in the event.
District Deputy Commissioner Paul L. Khuma, who also chairs the International Paragliding World Championship Organizing Committee, inaugurated the event.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, the Indian handball team placed sixth at the Asian Women’s Handball Championship (AWHC) 2024, matching the country's best-ever finish in the competition even as Japan stunned reigning champion South Korea to win the title here on Tuesday. Team India gave a tough and spirited fight to heavyweights and 10-time silver medalists China in the 5th/6th place playoff, pushing them to the very end in a 41-30 reverse.
Japan overcame the record champions South Korea in a gripping finale, overturning a 12-9 deficit at half-time into a 25-24 win. Japan claimed their second title, breaking South Korea’s streak of seven straight championship wins.
