GUWAHATI: Officials in Aizawl acted quickly against five girls, three of them minors, after a horrific video of them physically assaulting and bullying a juvenile girl surfaced on social media.

The incident, which occurred on March 19, outraged many people, and the authorities and child protection stepped in immediately.

After the new footage of the shocking incident came out, Aizawl District's District Child Protection Officer Dr. R. Lalrinhlua filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Bawngkawn Police Station in the morning on Wednesday.

The victim, who was assaulted, has been put up at Synod Rescue Home after the attack, where officials are trying to get permission for a medical examination—a crucial step toward moving legal proceedings against the attackers forward.

The five accused persons are residents of the Edenthar BSUP (Basic Services to the Urban Poor) complex in Aizawl. Two adult offenders among them—Belinda Lalruatfeli (19) of Block 8/203 and Ngurthansiami (23) of Block 13/404—were released on a Personal Recognizance (PR) bond subject to further legal action.

At the same time, the three juvenile delinquents were brought before the Juvenile Justice Board by the Special Juvenile Unit of Bawngkawn Police Station so that necessary legal action could be taken in line with juvenile justice legislation.

The incident has evoked widespread outrage on social media, with users calling for severe punishment for the perpetrators. Public outcry has amplified voices demanding justice, as users are concerned about an increase in bullying and violence among young people.

Authorities have reaffirmed that legal action would be taken forward after the medical examination of the victim is done, as they reaffirmed support for ensuring justice and accountability for the victim.
