LSAIZAWL: The book "Mizo History and the Great Chiefs of Sailo: Vandula & Ropuiliani" was launched on Saturday at the Aijal Club by Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma.
Written by four prominent researchers from Mizoram University and released by the Dr. Selbuanga Foundation, the book explores the Sailo dynasty's rich past, devoting particular attention to the legendary personalities of Chief Vandula and his wife, Ropuiliani.
The Chief Minister highlighted the challenges involved in recording Mizo history in his speech, particularly since there aren't many written records as the Mizo alphabet wasn't adopted until the early 1900s. He underlined the significance of creating narratives that depart from British colonial interpretations and explore pre-colonial history from indigenous viewpoints.
"We still have a lot of history to discover, particularly about pre-colonial times. For scholars and enthusiasts, creating our own narratives is a worthwhile endeavour," he stated.
The book honours Ropuiliani, the first known female chief in Mizo history and a well-known independence fighter, while also highlighting the legacy of Chief Vandula.
Following Vandula's passing, Ropuiliani fiercely opposed British colonial rule while leading several villages in southern Mizoram. Because of her efforts, she was apprehended and imprisoned in Chittagong, where she passed away in 1895.
For their research, the authors used both oral traditions and written records. Dr. Laithangpuii, one of the co-authors, presented an overview of their study findings, and Dr. Hmingthanzuali presented a preview of the book.
The descendants of Ropuiliani's father, Lalsavunga, the former chief of Aizawl, as well as the grandchildren of Vandula and Ropuiliani attended the event. The community's keen interest in conserving and understanding their cultural legacy is demonstrated by the attendance of Mizo history enthusiasts, students, and invited guests.
Ropuiliani's status as a key figure in Mizo history is solidified by her legacy as a strong leader who inspires pride and patriotism to this day.
