Mizoram CM Appeals for Free COVID-19 Vaccines from Govt of India

Aizawl: Mizoram chief minister Zoramthanga urged the NDA-led central government to provide free COVID-19 vaccines for the state.

In a tweet, Zoramthanga wrote, "Humble request for special category states like us to be provided with vaccines free of charge by the Govt of India; to save our stressed economic resources!"

Further, the chief minister said "While most parts of India appears to have reached a stage where the new cases of Covid-19 are declining, North East India is still witnessing an increasing trend of new cases.

The pandemic puts serious stress on the resources of the country and this has far more severe impacts on small states with small resource bases like Mizoram.

On top of this, we are now required to buy the vaccines for the 18 - 44 years age group, which puts more stress on our meager resources.

I have written yesterday to the Hon'ble Prime Minister requesting his kind intervention for Govt of India to buy the entire vaccine requirements and make equitable distributions to all the states.

I also requested that the special category states like Mizoram are provided with vaccines free of charge by the Govt of India. I also requested all the North East Chief Ministers to take a similar line of action, so as to present a united front to the Govt of India."

on the other hand, Mizoram reported 312 fresh COVID-19 cases, raising the coronavirus tally to 12,399, while the death toll climbed to 41 with one more fatality, officials said on Tuesday.

The northeastern state now has 3,144 active cases, and 9,214 people have recovered from the disease so far, they said. Aizawl district registered the highest number of 197 new infections, followed by Lawngtlai (56) and Lunglei (28).

Mizoram has thus far tested 3,93,684 samples for COVID-19.
