THENZAWL: An ambitious plan to transform Thenzawl, a scenic census town in Serchhip district, into a ‘Peace City’ (Muanna Khawpui) designed to accommodate up to 10 lakh residents was presented by Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma. He made this announcement during his address at a conference of the Vantawng group of the Young Mizo Association (YMA) held at Buangpui village.

CM Lalduhoma, who represents the Serchhip constituency where Thenzawl is located, stated that he had already discussed the project with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and is hopeful of receiving financial support from the centre.

“I have also discussed the plan with the 16th Finance Commission. The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has approved Rs 10 crore to develop a master plan for the project. However, it will take time to materialize,” he stated.

The aim of the proposed Peace City is to become a major urban hub in Mizoram while maintaining its tranquil setting. Thenzawl, located approximately 90 km from Aizawl, is already a renowned centre for Mizo handloom and a growing tourist destination, home to attractions like the Vantawng Fall — the highest waterfall in the state — a deer park and Mizoram’s only golf course.

Further boosting the region’s appeal to visitors, Lalduhoma additionally announced that his government plans to develop a ropeway at Vantawng Fall in order to enhance tourism.
