AIZAWL: The Mizoram Environment, Forests & Climate Change Department, along with several agencies and NGOs, organized a large-scale mock drill to improve preparedness for forest fires on January 31.
The drill took place near Durtlang, Leitan, as part of the directives issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. It followed discussions in a State Level Monitoring Committee meeting on forest fire management.
As part of the exercise, an artificial forest fire scenario was created to test coordination and emergency response. The operation was led by Pu Lalnunsanga Khawlhring, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Aizawl Forest Division, who served as the Site Incident Commander.
Senior officials, including Pu AK Biswal, PCCF Mizoram, and Pu NC Saravanan, CCF (Hqrs), oversaw the drill from the State Forest Fire Control Room. Their role was to ensure efficient fire control strategies and manage rescue operations for both people and wildlife.
Aligned with the State Action Plan on Forest Fire, the exercise aimed to spread awareness and strengthen response strategies before the peak fire season, which usually starts in January.
After the drill, officials gathered for a review session at the State Forest Fire Control Room. They assessed the overall effectiveness of the exercise, identifying strengths and areas needing improvement.
The successful drill highlighted Mizoram’s proactive approach to forest fire management and inter-agency collaboration to protect its rich biodiversity.
