AIZAWL: The Mizoram government announced a state human rights commission following an order of the Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court, according to an official.

Government advocate H. Lalmalsawmi informed the court about forming the human rights panel and creating 16 posts for it during the hearing of a PIL filed by the Zofa Welfare Organization (ZWO) last week.

The government advocate, on November 27, submitted two notifications to the Gauhati High Court's Aizawl bench confirming compliance with the court's directive issued on September 6.

The division bench, which included Justice Nelson Sailo and Justice Marli Vankung, noted that the government's notifications from October 11 demonstrated that the state government had constituted the Mizoram State Human Rights Commission under Section 21(4) & (1) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993.

The panel established 16 posts, including the chairperson, two members, officers, and staffers, at its headquarters in Aizawl.

Lalmalsawmi informed the court that the process of appointing suitable individuals as the chairperson and members of the human rights commission, along with securing an appropriate building for the panel, is underway and will require some time.
