AIZAWL: The Zo Re-Unification Organisation, a Mizoram-based body representing the ethnic Zo or Mizo tribes spread across India, Bangladesh and Myanmar, has launched an identity card that certifies indigenous status for its members. The new identity card was formally released by Mizoram Assembly Speaker Lalbiakzama in Aizawl.
General Secretary of ZORO L. Ramdinliana Renthlei pointed out that this identity card aligns with the principles of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), 2007, empowering the Zo communities to affirm indigenous status and enable its ability to maintain connections beyond borders, for cultural, economic, spiritual, and social purposes.
The card will empower the Zo to assert their rights and reduce hassle for people moving between India, Bangladesh, and Myanmar," Renthlei added. He said the endeavor was aimed at strengthening connections between the community across boundaries.
ZORO intends to officially communicate the development to the United Nations and to the governments of India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. It will also send copies to the state governments of India, such as Mizoram, Manipur, Assam, and Tripura.
This step will be quite significant in fostering the unity and identity of the ethnic Zo tribes, while ensuring rights are acknowledged, while ensuring their cultural heritage and cross-border relations.
