AIZAWL: Mizoram has marked a significant milestone in its transportation infrastructure with the completion of a railway bridge near Sairang, connecting the state’s capital city of Aizawl to India’s vast railway network for the first time since independence.

Union Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the achievement on Thursday, sharing a video of the completed bridge on social media platform X. He described it as a major step forward in enhancing connectivity for Mizoram.

The new railway line stretches from the Bairabi border in Assam to Sairang, located near Aizawl. The project, which has seen an investment of Rs. 7,714 crore so far, is expected to be inaugurated in July, with the total estimated cost capped at Rs. 8,215 crore. K Vanlalvena, a Rajya Sabha MP, informed Parliament that the railway line is nearing operational status, promising to integrate Aizawl into the national railway network.

The 51.38-km railway line is divided into four sections: Bairabi-Hortoki, Hortoki-Kawnpui, Kawnpui-Mualkhang, and Mualkhang-Sairang. The successful development of this railway project is expected to considerably increase Mizoram's connectivity, creating new opportunities for business and travel, and boosting the overall economic growth of the area. The new rail link is expected to be a key factor in revolutionizing the socio-economic profile of Mizoram.
