AIZAWL: Union Minister of State for Textiles and External Affairs Pabitra Margherita elaborated on Mizoram's immense growth potential in various sectors on Monday.

Speaking during a press conference, the minister was hopeful that the northeast state could see extensive development with assistance from central government programs, especially with the ambitious Viksit Bharat 2047 scheme.

This national vision is to make India a completely developed country by 2047, with special emphasis on region-specific and inclusive development.

Margherita emphasized the strides India has made under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, stating that the progress witnessed in recent years is unprecedented compared to the past six decades. He noted that peace and stability have steadily returned to the Northeast, creating a conducive environment for developmental projects and economic growth.

The minister emphasized the function of the North Eastern Council (NEC) in implementing different developmental projects in the northeastern region. He also referred to the fact that Union ministers regularly visit northeastern states fortnightly to oversee and review the implementation progress of these schemes so that development activities stay on track and are well implemented.

Emphasizing connectivity, Margherita stated Mizoram would soon be connected through railway—a highly anticipated move which will further contribute to regional connectivity as well as the local economy. He added that there was work being pursued to develop better air travel as well as other contemporary transport systems, to get the state better connected with the national development corridor.

Earlier in the day, at a state-level workshop on the Waqf Amendment Act 2025, Margherita spoke about the importance of the amendment, saying it was brought to correct systemic anomalies that have been going on for decades. He termed the act a move towards social justice, transparency, and inclusive development. The amendment is meant to benefit the common people by ensuring fairer management of Waqf properties, the minister said.

He also said that the bill had been extensively examined by a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee that consulted 282 stakeholders, such as civil society groups, political representatives, and religious institutions, before examining more than 7,700 petitions about the Waqf amendment bill. This, he added, ensured that the amendment was drafted following a democratic and inclusive process.

Minister Margherita's visit and remarks indicate the Centre's ongoing interest in the Northeast as a strategic and development-oriented region, with Mizoram as a prime beneficiary in the years ahead.
