AIZAWL: A 56-year-old man from Myanmar was arrested in Champhai district of Mizoram, near the India-Myanmar border, on Monday for carrying heroin. The heroin, valued at approximately Rs 82.5 lakh, was seized along with the vehicle used for transportation.
The Assam Rifles handed over both the suspect and the drugs to the state police for further investigation and legal action. The case is now under ongoing legal proceedings.
Meanwhile, in a major crackdown on drug trafficking in Assam, Lumding Police have seized a large quantity of narcotic tablets during an operation on Diphu Road. Acting on intelligence, police intercepted a vehicle (WB 74 AW 0889) and found 49,248 narcotic tablets hidden inside.
The confiscated drugs are estimated to be worth around Rs. 2.46 crore, marking one of the largest anti-drug operations in recent times. Two individuals, Bhaskar Sarkar and Yasin Ali, both from Nagaon, were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Authorities believe this bust has dismantled a significant drug network in the region. Investigations are ongoing to uncover further links and individuals involved in the illicit trade.
In a related operation, East Guwahati Police District, acting on reliable intelligence, apprehended two drug peddlers, Libion Boro (18) and Julius Majaw (23) from Byrnihat, at Jorabat Crossing last month. The police seized 17 vials of heroin (22.7 grams) and two mobile phones from their possession.
