AIZAWL: Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) is likely to announce the date of the election for village councils (VCs) in nine districts and local councils (LCs) within two urban local bodies during this week unless the Gauhati high court stays the upcoming polls.
An official of the SEC, who wished to remain anonymous, told on Sunday that elections in 544 VCs and 111 LCs have to be held before Feb 19 as the state govt reduced the terms of both the local self-govt by six months by terminating the current term on Feb 19.
"Voters' lists for both VCS and LCs elections were already published on Wednesday, and the state poll panel has been making preparations to conduct the upcoming polls," the official said. He, however, said things may change after a hearing on the issue in the Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court on Monday.
The decision of the state government to reduce the term of the current VCs by six months has been challenged by the All Mizoram Village Council Association (AMVCA), which submitted a petition in the Aizawl bench of the Gauhati High Court. The AMVCA was compelled to withdraw its first petition as the order issued by the state local administration department on Nov 20 last year was superseded by another order on Nov 21.
