Aizawl: Two Myanmarese nationals were arrested for smuggling foreign currency by a team of Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police in a joint operation in Mizoram's Siaha District on January 10.

The total value of the total currency seized in the operation amounted to a sum of one crore, forty-eight lakh and seventy thousand (1.48 Crore) rupees. The arrested individuals have been taken into custody.

Earlier this month, troops of the Guwahati Frontier's Border Security Force (BSF) foiled an attempt to smuggle foreign currency along the Indo-Bangladesh border in West Bengal's Cooch Behar district.

Acting on reliable intelligence, BSF personnel intercepted 100,000 Bangladeshi Taka and $103,800 USD, valued at approximately ₹89 lakh, being smuggled into Bangladesh from India.

The vigilant troops detected suspicious activity during routine patrols and swiftly acted to thwart the smuggling attempt. In a post on X, BSF Guwahati stated, “BSF troops of @BSF_Guwahati Ftr foiled foreign currency smuggling attempt at the International border of Dist-Coochbehar(WB) & seized 1,03,800 USD currency value approx. Rs. 89 Lakh & 100,000/- Bangladesh Taka.”

In another incident, two individuals, Gobinda Barman and Chandan Ray, were arrested in Dhubri, Assam, for possessing counterfeit Indian currency. Residents of Matiapara village in Kokrajhar district, they were apprehended in Haripur under Tamarhat Police Station. Authorities seized fake notes, 1,500 blank sheets, chemicals, and a scooter used for operations.
