More Than 1,900 Bru Voters Removed From Mizoram's State Voters List

More than 1,900 misplaced voters has been removed from the Mizoram's state voters list

MIZORAM : A number of 1,908 voter's name has been removed from the state voter list in Mizoram. The only cause of this elimination is the enrollment of these voters in the electoral roll of the neighbourhood state, Tripura.

David Liansanglura Pachuau, the Joint Chief Electoral Officer of Mizoram, stated that, the Bru voters failed to return to Mizoram during the repatriation. They settled down in Tripura and hail from nine assembly constituencies in three districts.

He further mentions that, among the 1,908 Bru voters, 1,550 people belong to the Tripura border Mamit district and 187 people are from Kolasib district of Assam border. The rest 171 people hail from Lunglei district in Mizoram. The Tripura election department has sent a notice regarding the elimination of the names through the Electoral Roll Officer Net, on which the state carry forwarded the process, said David Liansanglura Pachuau.

According to sources, a number of 5000 Bru voters was registered in the state voters list by the Tripura government. Pachuau said that, they have requested their peers in Tripura to fasten the process of enrollment of the misplaced voters in the state voters list. After the the murder of a Mizo forest officer in 1997 by the former Bru militant, many Bru voters shifted to Tripura because of ethnic tensions.

Consequently, these people re-settled in Tripura for more than 20 years. The first repatriation in 2009, November was not just scurried by the murder of the Mizo villager but it also raised consternation among people which led to a separate round of exodus. Attempts has been made by both Tripura and Mizoram government between 2009 and 2019, to repatriate the Bru Tribals from Tripura.

The people who were hesitant to return to Mizoram were given a chance to permanently re-settle in Tripura after an agreement was signed between the Centre, government of Tripura and Mizoram and officials of many Bru organisations on 16th of January, 2020. The agreement allowed the 35,000 Bru tribals to settle down in Tripura.
