Three buildings collapsed due to Landslide in Mizoram, 3 dead, 11 injured

Aizawl: Three buildings constructed under the Basic Service to Urban Poor (BSUP) scheme at Durtlang in Mizoram collapsed yesterday due to landslide resulting in 3 confirmed deaths including two children (one boy and one girl), and 11 others injured.

The BSUP Housing Complex at Durtlang houses 20 buildings and one community hall, of which 3 buildings collapsed due to landslide yesterday evening. The rescue operation was swiftly taken up by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), Assam Rifles and BSF personnel under the supervision of Aizawl District Disaster Management Authority headed by Vanlalngaihsaka, DC, Aizawl with support from several NGO members.

In the night, The Information & Public Relations Minister Lalruatkima, School Education Minister Lalchhandama, Agriculture Minister C. Lalrinsanga, Dy. Speaker Mr. Lalrinawma and the Aizawl North-I constituent MLA Vanlalhlana were among the top officials who promptly reached the site, overseeing the rescue operation.

Today morning, Chief Minister Mr. Zoramthanga visited the site accompanied by Disaster Management & Rehabilitation Minister Mr. Lalchamliana and Chief Secretary Mr. Lalnunmawia Chuaungo. Other ministers - Dr. R Lalthangliana, Mr. K Lalrinliana, Mr. Lalchhandama Ralte and Mr. Lalruatkima, Aizawl Mayor Mr. PC Lalhmingthanga also visited the site today.

Chief Minister gave heartiest condolences to the victims and good lucked to the injured persons for earliest recovery. He announced that the state government will give ex-gratia Rs. 4,00,000 each to the deceased persons.

The BSUP building Complex was constructed in 2009 by National Project Construction Corporation Ltd. (NPCC) and Royal Infra Construction Ltd with an estimated cost of Rs. 64 lakhs for each building, project cost totalling to about Rs. 26.23 crore for the construction of the building complex. This project was launched by President Ram Nath Kovind on his visit to Mizoram on the 30th of November, 2017 along with other BSUP building projects at Lawipu, Edenthar and Rangvamual.
