CHAMPHAI: Police confirmed on Thursday that two prisoners from Myanmar escaped from a jail in Mizoram's Champhai district.
According to officials, the escapees—36-year-old Vansuieni alias Suinunfeli from Tahan in Kalaymyo, Sagaing Division, and 44-year-old Lalchhanmawii from Khawmawi village in Chin State—broke out of the prison through a toilet made of tin sheets.
Both women were awaiting trial for drug trafficking charges. It is notable that Lalchhanmawii had previously escaped from Aizawl’s Women’s Central Jail on November 30 of the previous year.
She was re-arrested in Champhai on May 11 after four individuals caught with heroin disclosed that they had obtained the drugs from her.
Police have filed a case at Champhai police station and initiated a search operation to apprehend the fugitives. Champhai district shares a border with Myanmar, raising concerns about possible cross-border movements.
Meanwhile, earlier this month, a detainee allegedly managed to escape from the custody of the Dispur Police in Guwahati on Tuesday, sparking a massive manhunt. Dharmendra Rajbonshi, who was arrested in connection with a fraud case, was being held under tight security at the police station. Despite the tight security, he somehow managed to flee. The police have launched an immediate and extensive search operation to track down and capture Rajbonshi.
Similarly, in yet another significant development, Morigaon police re-arrested the absconding inmate Sarifuddin of Tinsukia Mahmaria Pather under Laharighat Police Station who had fled away along with other four inmates on October 11 from Morigaon Jail on Saturday.
