Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) urges state govt to seal Indo-Mayanmar border

MIZORAM: Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has urged the state government to seal Indo-Mayanmar border over coronavirus scare.

The state shares 510 km-unfenced border with Myanmar.

MPCC said that people from neighbouring countries including China had entered the state without screening.

Around 14,640 people have been kept under complete observation for coronavirus, said a Health Department official from Mizoram a few days ago. At least seven screening centers are set up in different parts of the state along with international and inter-state borders with the Lengpui airport. The state health secretary, Mr. H Lalengmawia mentioned that over 14,648 people, who had traveled from foreign countries, have undergone screening at these counters since February 2.

According to Lalengmawia, at least 41 people who have traveled from outside have been kept under house quarantine. The government has sent 5 blood samples to Guwahati Medical College for tests. Three of the samples have tested negative and two of the samples were rejected, the official said.

The government has further set up a 32 bedded isolation ward at the State’s Premier Medical College (ZMC), including 5 bedded ward in each district hospital for treating any suspected patients.

A senior official said on Sunday, two persons who had returned from China in the beginning of this year have been kept under house quarantine as a preventive measure, though they are not detected positive with the virus and were tested negative for the contagious virus.

A medical team has also been set to the airport for screening the passengers and collecting samples from them if required.

Meanwhile, an NGO in Mizoram demanding setting up of fencing along India-Myanmar borders, claimed on Saturday that in the past 15 days drugs worth over Rs 100 crore were smuggled from Myanmar and have been seized by the authorities in Mizoram.

Mizoram Chakma Alliance Against Discrimination (MCAAD) president Paritosh Chakma in a statement said that during the last 15 days drugs valued over Rs 100 crore smuggled from neighboring Myanmar have been seized by the authorities in Mizoram and 134 drug peddlers and smugglers have been arrested.
