GANGTOK: Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) has directed the closure of all fairs and tambolas across the state to ensure a supportive environment for students preparing for their Class X and XII board exams. The decision was announced during the closing ceremony of the Maghey Sankranti Mela 2025 in Jorethang.
The Chief Minister emphasized that with board exams starting in February, creating a peaceful atmosphere for students is a priority. Following his announcement, district administrations issued notices canceling all permissions for fairs and tambolas with immediate effect.
Tambola, a lottery-style game popular in the region, has been identified as a source of noise and disruption due to public announcements of game numbers. Residents have also raised concerns over tambola being akin to gambling, with events increasingly held during other occasions, including sports matches.
The decision has received widespread support within Sikkim and in neighboring areas like the Darjeeling hills, where similar issues have been reported.
The announcement came after a grand eight-day Maghey Sankranti Mela that featured performances by popular artists, including Kailash Kher and local stars like Jetsen Dohna Dolma. Nepalese celebrities Sabin Rai and Trishna Gurung also entertained large crowds.
Looking ahead, the chief minister proposed plans to elevate the Maghey Sankranti Mela to a national event and develop a dedicated riverside venue near Jorethang for future celebrations.
