GANGTOK: Sikkim's tourism sector has seen a remarkable comeback, hosting 1,62,553 international tourists during the year 2022 and 2023, based on figures released by the Union Tourism Minister. This is a significant turnaround from the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, indicating the state's increased appeal for international tourists.
In 2022, Sikkim attracted 68,645 foreign visitors, a number that surged to 93,908 in 2023. This increase was highlighted in a parliamentary response from Sikkim Lok Sabha MP Indra Hang Subba, emphasizing the state's successful revitalization efforts in the tourism sector post-pandemic. The figures were part of a broader report on foreign tourist visits to India, presented in Parliament on March 10.
Sikkim has emerged as the leading destination for international tourists among the eight Northeastern states for both years, reflecting its rising prominence on the global tourism map. MP Indra Hang Subba attributed this success to the proactive measures taken by Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang-Golay, which included promoting Sikkim as a safe and attractive destination.
The Sikkim government has prioritized tourism, which supports the livelihoods of 18% of the state's population. The 2024-25 state budget emphasized developing tourism by unique projects and upgraded infrastructure. As the summer season is on the horizon, the government is in dialogue with Union ministries to facilitate hassle-free air and road connectivity, especially for Pakyong Airport and National Highway-10, to achieve the highest tourist arrival.
