Batters guide Assam to nail-biting win against Uttarakhand

GUWAHATI: Assam showcased a stellar batting performance to secure a thrilling six-wicket victory against Uttarakhand in their final game in the Vijay Hazare Trophy match held in Jaipur on Sunday. Chasing a challenging target of 311 runs in 50 overs, Assam achieved the target in 49.1 overs with four wickets down.

While opener Pradyun Saikia (16) failed to make a significant impact, the rest of Assam’s top-order batters rose to the occasion. Rishav Das, Sumit Ghadigaonkar, captain Sibsankar Roy, and Denish Das all contributed half-centuries, with Sibsankar leading the charge. The skipper remained unbeaten on 71 runs off 57 balls (4x5, 6x1) and emerged as the top scorer.

Rishav Das anchored the innings early on, scoring 58 off 75 balls, which included seven boundaries. Sumit Ghadigaonkar added 65 runs off 72 deliveries, hitting five fours and two sixes. Denish Das played a brisk knock, smashing 61 runs off just 49 balls (4x4, 6x2). Saahil Jain, contributing 30 runs, was at the crease alongside Sibsankar when Assam crossed the finish line.

Earlier, Uttarakhand, opting to bat first, posted a formidable total of 310 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs. Opener Ravikumar Samarth laid the foundation with a brilliant 113 off 119 balls (4x10). He received strong support from Aditya Tare, who remained unbeaten on 81 runs (4x9, 6x2), captain Kunal Chendala (46) and A Suryavanshi (38).

Among Assam’s bowlers, Darshan Ranjbongshi delivered the best figures, claiming 3 wickets for 65 runs. Akash Sengupta finished 2-44.

With this victory Assam ended their campaign in the competition on Sunday. The side collected 12 points from their seven matches and finished at sixth in the group A points table.
