GUWAHATI: Assam ended their Ranji Trophy campaign with a heavy defeat against Saurashtra at Rajkot on Saturday. The side lost the match by an innings and 144 runs.

Resuming their second innings at 67/1 overnight, Assam suffered an early blow, losing their first wicket of the day after adding only 7 runs as left hander Sib Sankar Roy (5) departed on the bowling of Jadeja. Wickets then fell at regular intervals, and the visitors were eventually bowled out for 166.

In form batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar (40) was the top scorer for Assam in the second innings, while Denish Das (24), Pradyun Saikia (37), and Amlanjyoti Das (30) made notable contributions. Captain Riyan Parag, who returned from an injury and played a good knock in the first innings,  failed to open his account. Assam lost their last eight wickets for just 92 runs.

There were two notable partnerships in the innings. The first, a 56-run stand, came on the previous day between Denish Das and Pradyun Saikia for the first wicket. The second, a 50-run partnership, was put together today between Ghadigaonkar and Amlanjyoti Das for the fifth wicket.

Among Saurashtra’s bowlers, D. Jadeja delivered the standout performance, claiming 5/50.

With this defeat, Assam finished their campaign staying at the bottom of the points table, collecting only six points from their seven matches this season.
