GUWAHATI: Assam defeated Chandigarh by 11 runs in the Syad Mushtaq Ali Cricket at Visakhapatnam on Wednesday. Batting first, Assam were bowled out 150 in 19.1 overs. Later they bowled out Chandigarh 139 also in 19.1 overs.
Invited to bat, Assam made a good start and put 26 runs on the opening partnership between Sarupam Purkayastha and Ruhinandan Pegu in 2.5 overs before they quickly reduced to 3-49. Pegu got out on his individual score 14 and he was quickly followed by captain Denish Das who failed to open his account. Other opener Sarupam Purkayastha contributed 22 from 16 balls with the help of four boundaries.
When it looked like Chandigarh were taking control over the game, Sumit Ghadigaonkar and Saahil Jain made a good partnership and brought Assam in the game. The duo on the fourth-wicket added 61 runs. Sumit took 27 balls to score 42 with the help of two boundaries and three sixes. Saahil scored a half century in the innings. His 51 runs knock from 35 balls had one boundary and four sixes. Sandeep Sarma came out with the best figure for Chandigarh picking 4-22. He got good support from Raj Bawa 3-28.
Chandigarh tried their best to chase the total but losing wickets on regular intervals made Assam’s job easy. Raj Bawa (33) was the top scorer in the innings. Among the bowlers of Assam Mukhtar Hussain, Mrinmoy Dutta, Avinov Choudhury and Nipon Deka bagged two wickets each.
