GUWAHATI: The Guwahati Sports Association (GSA) has unveiled an ambitious plan to nurture young football talent in Assam through Bordoloi Trophy. As part of this initiative, a batch of Under-19 footballers from the state will be sent to Spain for advanced training.

Announcing the plan during an event, GSA Secretary Devajit Saikia expressed optimism about the future of football in the state. He said, “We had a glorious past in football, but unfortunately, the current scenario is not the same. However, Assam is home to many talented footballers, and with proper training and support, we can revive the golden days of the sport.”

Elaborating on the initiative, Saikia said, “We have planned to deploy spotters at all venues during the upcoming Bordoloi Trophy tournament. Since each participating team is required to include two in the playing XI, this will provide a great opportunity to identify promising talent. Based on their performance, we will select around 20-22 young footballers for a larger development program. As part of this plan, these selected players will be sent to Spain, where they will receive modern, world-class training.”

The next edition of the Bordoloi Trophy is set to commence on January 29, with matches being held simultaneously across districts in Assam. The inclusion of U-19 players is mandatory for all participating teams except the final round, making it a pivotal platform for young athletes to showcase their skills.
